A SUCCESS STORY OF ONE OF OUR SUPPLIERS - PWANI SEAFOOD KENYA LIMITED

Geoffrey Huhu’s life changed for the better when he received a call from Carrefour Kenya’s Marketing & Sourcing department in 2015. They had discovered his fish business listing, Pwani Sealife Kenya Limited from a local listing portal in the internet. Carrefour was looking at the time for a reliable supplier for fresh local fish! Geoffrey took up the challenge to supply fish to Carrefour Kenya inaugural branch, The Hub in May 2016. He started with 200 KGs of fish per week. Today he supplies five Carrefour Hypermarkets in Nairobi up to 1 tonne of fish per week. Geoffrey was not the only beneficiary of this fruitful relationship. Indeed it impacted the local communities from whom he is procuring the fish too. His partner fishermen have tripled their yield due to the demand from Geoffrey’s company.

Geoffrey and his team source and supply to Carrefour salty water fish from the entire coastline region from Malindi, Ngomeni, Watamu, Mida, Vanga and Kilifi, to name but a few. The salty water fish types include the snapper family, groupers, king fish, parrot fish, tuna fish and rabbit fish. Due to demand he added fresh water fish under his cap and sources directly from Kisumu, Tilapia and Nile perch fish. From a local impact, this grew to a countrywide one!

Geoffrey prides himself in providing fresh fish in the shortest time possible to the Carrefour shelves. The fishes hit the shelves in less than 24 hours after catch and are transported in consolidated airtight boxes filled with only crushed ice that are in the same temperatures as the display in the store. This ensures freshness without tempering with the quality. Geoffrey remembers:” When I started, I was the one driving overnight every other day from Mombasa to Nairobi to bring the fishes. Now I hire drivers to do it and I can focus on growing my business”

When asked what he likes most about being a Carrefour supplier? Geoffrey answered: “the good supplier/retailer relationship. This is timely payments, being accommodative to supplier needs and terms always respected. With this partnership, my company grew beyond my imagination”

For Geoffrey this is only the beginning and he aspires to provide larger variety of fish and increase his supply as demand grows with the expansion of the stores.
